We understand that college is expensive, and funding often goes to those “other” expenses . . . you know, like books. So we have created a guide to eating free at Elon.
Breakfast:
On Tuesday mornings from 9:40 - 10:20 am Elon is kind enough to host College Coffee. Here you can load up on enough muffins, pastries, bagels, and fruit to eat breakfast for the rest of the week.
Lunch:
Elon promotes student/teacher relations. Because of this they created the “take your student to lunch” program. This gives all professors a free meal plan to use when eating lunch with a student. Asking your professor to lunch not only gets you a free meal, but they love the idea (making it an act in your favor).
The good news is the above program is for all faculty and staff with a valid phoenix card. Get in good with faculty advisors from the various organizations you're in (see below) and get them to supply an extra lunch here and there.
Dinner:
In order to promote the Elon Experience, various campus organizations hold weekly meetings. There is almost always food at these meetings. Most of these groups are large enough that if you slip into the meeting, no one will notice your not a regular. (Hey, you just may like what you hear and decide to stick around)
Some meetings we have found with better than average food:
Monday: WSOE offers free pizza to all staffers on the first Monday of every month.
Tuesday: InterVarsity is huge. It’s a hit or miss on whether or not they have food on the night you choose, but no one will notice you if you play it cool.
Wednesday: Habitat for Humanity sometimes has food and on the nights they don’t, Campus Outreach usually does.
Thursday: BSU has a free home cooked meal every Thursday at 5:00 pm. They love to share.
Thursday night is Midnight Meals. Go to the Zone, between 11:00 pm and 2:00 am, and grab as much pizza as your arms can carry.
Other ways to get free food:
Interest meetings, discussion forums, and focus groups meet randomly throughout the year and there is always the chance of having food. Check E-net, table tents, and the information channel (7 and 14 on campus) for these opportunities.
If you are looking for a quick snack, try Harris Teeter, it has free samples everyday. You can get cookies, produce, cheese, and even breads and sauces.
